Recommended Room Size: For continuous, whole-room odor and VOC control, this machine is best suited for spaces up to approximately 300 sq ft (based on 8 ft ceilings) when run at medium-to-high speed. It can still help in larger rooms, but for best results in bigger spaces, place it as close as possible to the source of the odor or VOCs rather than relying on it to condition the entire room, or run it for longer stretches at full speed. These figures are engineering estimates based on the unit's airflow rate and general guidance for gas-phase odor control, not a certified VOC-CADR lab rating.

What This Machine Is — and Isn't: This machine is built primarily to target gas-phase pollutants — VOCs and odors — using activated carbon, which is what sets it apart from standard HEPA or MERV filters. Its intake and exhaust PET cloth filters also catch dust, hair, and other larger airborne particles along the way, but this is not a substitute for HEPA-level filtration — it is not designed to capture fine particulates in the PM2.5–PM5 range, such as fine dust, pollen, or smoke particulates. If fine-particle allergens are a primary concern, pair it with a dedicated HEPA air purifier. It also does not use ozone, so there's no risk of the byproducts associated with ozone-generating "odor eliminators." Results depend on the severity and continuity of the odor or VOC source — a strong, ongoing source (such as an unresolved leak or fresh renovation) will saturate the filter faster and may require closer placement, higher speeds, or more frequent canister replacement.

For reference, normal conversation is typically around 60 dB. Lower speeds are well-suited for bedrooms and quiet living spaces, while higher speeds are best for faster odor knockdown when you're not in the room. See the product video for a real-world sense of the sound level at each speed.

Energy Efficient by Design: This machine uses an ECM (electronically commutated motor) — the same efficient motor technology used in modern HVAC systems — and draws a maximum of just 40 watts, even at full speed. That's about the same as a single household light bulb. Run it at a lower speed and it uses proportionally less power. Even running continuously at full speed for 24 hours uses under 1 kWh of electricity — typically only a few cents to around $0.25 a day, depending on your local electricity rate — so it's inexpensive to leave running around the clock.

Dual PET Cloth Filters and Particulate Filtration: Both the intake and exhaust sides of this machine are fitted with a 1/8” thick woven PET (polyester) cloth filter. On the exhaust side, it prevents carbon dust from being released into the air; on the intake side, it covers the entire wall surface of the filter, keeping dust, hair, and other larger airborne debris from entering the canister and preventing the clogging that would otherwise reduce airflow. This cloth captures dust and larger particulate matter, though — like most non-HEPA media — it is not designed to capture fine PM2.5 or PM5 particulates. A metal safety screen on the exhaust side additionally protects your pets and loved ones from accidental contact with the moving fan parts.

Easily Replaceable Canister with Multiple Size Options: Once the filter canister reaches the end of its useful life, it can be easily replaced by removing the 4 Phillips-head screws that hold the fan motor to the filter and reattaching them to the new canister. This simple process takes just a couple of minutes and requires no special tools or technical knowledge. Replacement canisters come in two sizes: a 12” canister containing 6 lbs of carbon, and a 24” canister containing 12 lbs of carbon.

Useful Life and Replacement Schedule: Activated carbon acts like a porous sponge that traps gaseous pollutants in the pores on its surface. It remains effective until all of the pores become saturated with impurities and can no longer adsorb contaminants. The effectiveness and useful life of the filter are directly correlated with how much activated carbon is inside it and how polluted the air being cleaned is. There's no definitive answer for how quickly the filter will become saturated and need replacing in your particular application, because it depends on factors such as the level of VOCs in your environment, the volume of air in the room that must be circulated through the filter, how quickly the VOCs and odors are replenished if their source hasn't been removed, and the climate zone you live in.

Climate Zone Considerations: Humidity is not a friend of carbon filters, because airborne water competes with airborne contaminants for the vacant pores on the carbon's surface. The same filter will become saturated faster in a climate zone with humidity over 80% than in a climate zone with humidity at 50% or lower — the drier your climate, the less negative effect it has on the carbon filter. If you live in a humid climate, please store the filter in an airtight plastic bag, sealed with a zip-lock or twist tie, to keep it away from moisture when not in use.

Initial Cleaning and Maintenance: The activated carbon inside the filter canister's walls comes in the form of granules measuring 2–6mm in size. During transport, shaking can cause the granules to rub together and release smaller particles that occasionally escape through the filter's inner fabric and outer metal screen. Before first use, we recommend using a vacuum or a slightly damp paper towel to wipe down any particles that may have been released during shipping. The filter will not release much carbon after this initial cleaning, but to eliminate any chance of carbon being released into the air, we've equipped the exhaust side with the same 1/8” PET cloth filter described above, which lets air through while capturing dust and larger particles. Both the exhaust-side and intake-side PET cloth filters are machine washable.
